Charles Edward Ley Gardner- 1843-1932 (Lord Mayor 1901)

 

Charles Gardner was born in Cheltenham 20th August 1843. He was educated at Bristol Grammar School and Mr David Vine's Academy in Kingsdown.  He became senior parner in the firm of Gardner Thomas & Co., wholesale grocers, Nelson Street, Bristol.  In 1865 he joined the 1st Gloucester Volunteer Artillery and in 1873 received his Captain's commission.  He was elected Councillor for the District ward in 1881 and became a Justice of the Peace in 1898. He served as Mayor in 1901.  He served 48 years as a councillor until 1929   He was active in the Wesleyan church and held many offices including preacher and class leader.  He died in 1832 at the age of 89.
