Christopher Albert Hayes - 1850-1916 (Mayor 1909 & 10)

 

Christopher Hayes was born in Clifton on 1st August 1850.  He was apprenticed to his uncle Mr J Hayes of Bedminster and worked with other firms to become a builder and contractor commencing business in Bristol in 1877.  He completed a number of projects for the Bristol Docks committee, built the Clifton Rocks Railway for Sir George Newnes, The Peoples palace in Baldwin Street, three banks for Lloyds and many other buildings.  He was Mayor of Bristol in 1909 and 1910.  He died in 1916
